yoga in old brooklyn

at metropolitan coffee

thursday night vinyasa yoga
$15.00
sunday morning r&r yoga
$15.00

yoga in ob pairs local yoga instructor melissa klimo-major (creator of balance & brews and chakra pop, popular social yoga projects) with metropolitan coffee, the old brooklyn neighborhood spot well-known for their after hours coffeehouse yoga sessions.

our mission is to create balance that flows on and off the mat by sharing functional yoga practices in everyday spaces built for community to gather and connect.

each week offers two ways to practice in metropolitan’s brand-new lower level event & gallery space: a thursday evening mixed-levels vinyasa to move and unwind, and a sunday morning gentle restore & regenerate session inspired by the balance & brews format: after sunday’s class, you’ll have time to linger for a relaxed social hour, enjoying the event space at your own pace. coffee and the full metropolitan menu will be available upstairs for purchase.

no membership requirements, no need to log in, no pressure, just yoga & community.

a note on accessibility: drop-in rates are currently $15. as future resources allow, our plans include sliding scale pricing, pop-up donation based classes, and online resources. if the current rate is a genuine barrier to you getting on your mat right now, send us a note and we'll figure it out together.

frequently asked questions & things to know /

  • yoga will be practiced in the lower level of metropolitan coffee, accessible via staircase. please inquire in advance with any accessibility needs or questions.

weeknight classes will be held after hours, and weekend morning classes will be held during business hours, when the aroma of coffee and the hum of coffee drinkers above may be part of the experience. 🙃

the event space features a polished concrete flooring and adjustable lighting. practices will be held at a comfortable, seasonable room temperature. seating, shoe & coat storage, and a restroom is available on the lower level. we typically use music during classes, and may use aromatherapy. we do not offer hands-on assists.

there is a capacity limit for each class, designed to offer appropriate space for each practitioner.

props are available for use as required by a sequence, and a limited number of yoga mats is available to borrow. cleaning materials will be provided for students to clean loaned mats and props after each practice.

  • yes. sessions are led by an experienced, educated instructor and designed to be for any level of practitioner. while it may take you some time to learn the language and maybe get familiar working with some different muscles in your body, we commit to holding space for all and teaching at a pace that allows individuals to adapt to whatever level of challenge or chill they need within a group setting.

  • if classes are not full, we always welcome walk-ins. registration online ahead of time will guarantee you a spot in class, but you are welcome to show up and pay in person to join class up to five minutes before class start. in person payment can be taken via cash, venmo, apple pay, or credit.

please note that we cannot guarantee space for drop-ins.

  • coffee is not included in the class rate. because some classes are held after business hours, and because we love the idea of everyone choosing their own ritual beverage, we keep the menu open to personal interpretation. on sunday mornings, the cafe is open, and students are encouraged to grab their favorite refreshments after class and then return to the yoga space to settle back in and connect with the group off the mat.

  • anything you can comfortably move in. layers are always helpful, and yoga is traditionally practiced with bare feet. for r&r classes, which include a lot of supine and seated stretching, you may want socks.

  • just yourself 😊, some water, and a yoga mat/towel/any favorite props. we do have a limited amount of yoga mats to borrow, and we provide props (blocks, straps, blankets) if the practice requires them.

  • classes are designed with adults in mind, though minors are welcome to join when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. minors must be able to participate without disruption. a waiver must be signed for any minor, and the accompanying adult must remain in attendance throughout class.

  • metropolitan coffee has a parking lot, and street parking is free all over old brooklyn: there is parking along portman and just across broadview, on alvin.

  • to support a smooth shared experience, classes begin and end promptly. please plan to arrive 5–10 minutes early to check in, sign any needed waivers, and settle into the space before we move. in some cases, the building door may be locked at class start time and we may not be able to accommodate late entry. if you are late and the door is open, please enter quietly and join the group without disruption.

please refer to the refund policies below for more info.
