indigo dyeing

guide: jen d.

skill level: beginner

investment: $40

time: 2 hours

make & take: yes

our workshop will allow you to design and dye a tea towel and bandana with shibori, a traditional method of resist dyeing. after creating intricate patterns on fabric through various binding techniques, pieces are dipped into indigo, a plant-based natural dye that produces brilliant shades of blue.

how it works:

shibori involves tightly securing natural fabric into various shapes and through twists, binds and ties before introducing it into a vat of indigo. similar to tie-dyeing, the result of this practice is a one-of-a-kind design that reflects your creativity and personal intent.

the apothecary’s indigo dyeing workshop allows you to experience this traditional craft in a mindful and engaging way. you’ll be guided through various techniques, discovering how your own intuitive choices paired with age-old methods can come together to create stunning and fully unique patterns.

why we dye with indigo:

we learned this craft from a family of zapotec weavers in oaxaca, mexico, as part of a cultural group trip we were leading. during our visit, they graciously shared their wisdom and craft with us, inviting us to get hands-on in the fascinating alchemy of the natural dyeing process. the casa cruz family’s story is theirs to share, and if you ever have the joy of making it to oaxaca, please look them up. we honor them at our studios by featuring their hand-woven naturally-dyed textiles on the walls of our apothecary classroom, from our own collection + on loan from one of our good travel buddies for all of us to enjoy.

what’s included in this workshop:

under the guidance of apothecary assistant jen d. — a calm, creative soul who loves seeking natural pieces to infuse organic textures into the pieces she dyes — you’ll learn some traditional shibori dyeing techniques and have access to all the bands/binds/clamps, various shapes and items to create your own unique patterns. workshop includes 100% cotton materials, use of our indigo dye vat, disposable gloves, and drying racks/trays to allow your piece to drip dry before taking home. you’ll also go home with instructions and chemicals to set your color once your pieces fully dry.

students are encouraged to byo/beverage or favorite snack to allow time to socialize and nourish while textiles drip-dry before transferring home. (this is a make & take same-day event, but some drying time at the apothecary will be required.)
